Four teams got away to perfect starts after completing the opening day’s play with unblemished records at the NZ Secondary Schools Netball Champs at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua on Tuesday.
In a fair spread from around the country, St Mary’s College, Wellington, Westlake Girls High School (Auckland), St Hildas Collegiate School (Dunedin) and Trident High School (Whakatane) secured back-to-back wins after the opening two rounds of pool play.
Not far behind, Mt Albert Grammar School remained unbeaten after recording a win and a draw which was enough for them to take the lead in the Pool A standings.
One of the most popular events on the domestic calendar, the tournament features the top 16 secondary schools who qualified following the respective Upper North Island, Lower North Island and South Island Secondary School events. First established in 1993, the national secondary schools’ event is an important 91É«Ç鯬 pathway for players, coaches and management teams.
Split into four pools, the initial focus for the teams during Tuesday and Wednesday morning’s play is chasing a spot in the top two of their respective pools and with it a place in the top eight to remain in contention for the title.
St Mary’s College, Wellington, co-coached by former Silver Ferns mentor Waimarama Taumanu were too good for Dominic’s College when winning their opener 28-20 and did just enough to squeeze past cross-town rivals Queen Margaret College (Wellington) 29-27 to top Pool B.
Pool C is shaping as a tight contest with Westlake Girls High School and St Hida’s College recording comfortable wins across their two matches.
Both have former Silver Ferns on their coaching staff with April Ieremia guiding Westlake Girls High to comprehensive 43-23 and 43-19 wins over Manukura and St Andrews College, respectively.
St Hilda’s Collegiate, with Belinda Colling at the helm, were equally impressive after recording a 47-22 win over St Andrew’s College and 43-36 outcome over Manukura, setting an exciting prelude for tomorrow’s clash between the unbeaten pair.
Trident High School set the early pace to remain the only unbeaten team in Pool D after posting strong 41-27 and 34-24 wins over Nayland College and Scots College, respectively.
The final round of pool matches will be played on Wednesday morning with Mt Albert Grammar, Napier Girls High School, Columba, Howick College, St Mary’s, Queen Margaret College, Westlake Girls, St Hilda’s, Trident High School and Rotorua Girls’ High School all looking to press their claims for the top eight.
With matches played over four 10-minute quarters, cross-over matches will be played on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday to determine the make-up of Friday’s final place play-offs.
The final of the NZ Secondary School Champs will be played at 1.40pm on Friday.
